Short series you can finish in a weekend
Ten limited series with a handful of episodes each, from Chernobyl to Adolescence, that you can start on Friday and finish by Sunday.
Chernobyl
Not every great story needs six seasons. Some of the best television of the last decade has come in compact form: limited series and short-run shows with a clear beginning, middle and end. They ask for a weekend rather than a year, and they tend to be tightly written because there is no room for filler. The ten below each run to roughly a dozen episodes or fewer, and every one of them ends properly, with no cliffhanger waiting for a renewal that never comes.
Chernobyl (2019)
Craig Mazin's five-part drama reconstructs the 1986 nuclear disaster and the frantic, often desperate effort to contain it. Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson lead a cast that plays scientists and officials caught between physics and politics. The sound design and the slow sense of dread are remarkable. It is grim viewing, but also one of the most gripping history lessons television has produced.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Adapted from Walter Tevis's novel, this seven-episode series follows Beth Harmon, an orphan who discovers a gift for chess and rises through the competitive world of the 1950s and 1960s. Anya Taylor-Joy is magnetic in the lead. You do not need to know anything about chess: the matches are filmed like sporting events, and the real subject is a brilliant young woman fighting her own demons. The period design alone is worth the time.
Mare of Easttown (2021)
Kate Winslet plays a detective in a small Pennsylvania town investigating a young woman's murder while her own family life falls apart. Created by Brad Ingelsby, it works as a satisfying whodunit over seven episodes, but it is just as strong as a portrait of a community where everyone knows everyone. Winslet's performance is wonderfully unglamorous. Ideal for fans of crime drama who care about characters as much as clues.
Adolescence (2025)
Created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, this British drama begins with police arresting a thirteen-year-old boy for the murder of a classmate. Each of its four episodes is filmed in a single continuous shot, which makes the experience feel almost unbearably immediate. More than a crime story, it is about parents, schools and what boys absorb online. Short, intense and impossible to forget.
Baby Reindeer (2024)
