Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animation studio co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, has made some of the most beloved animated films ever produced. Its hand-drawn worlds are full of flying machines, forest spirits, bustling towns and enormous, comforting meals. For a newcomer, though, the catalogue can raise a simple question: which one first?

This list is not a ranking of quality. Instead, it is a suggested viewing order, beginning with the films that are easiest to fall in love with and moving gradually toward ones that are more complex, more mature or simply quieter. Follow it in order, or jump to whatever catches your eye.

1. Spirited Away (2001)

Spirited Away2001 · Film

Miyazaki's most celebrated film is also a perfect introduction. Ten-year-old Chihiro wanders into a mysterious spirit world while moving house with her parents, and must work in a bathhouse for gods and monsters to find her way home. Every frame is packed with invention, and Chihiro's growth from sulky child to brave heroine is deeply satisfying. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and it shows exactly what makes Ghibli special.

2. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

My Neighbor Totoro1988 · Film

Two sisters, Satsuki and Mei, move to the countryside with their father and discover gentle forest spirits living nearby, including the large, fluffy Totoro, who became the studio's emblem. There is no villain and very little conflict, only the wonder of childhood and the comfort of nature. It is ideal for young children, but adults often find it unexpectedly moving. Watch it on a slow afternoon.

3. Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

Kiki's Delivery Service1989 · Film

At thirteen, a young witch named Kiki must leave home for a year of independence, so she settles in a seaside town and starts a delivery business using her broomstick. The film is light and charming, but it also captures the self-doubt that comes with growing up and finding your place. The European-inspired town is one of Ghibli's loveliest settings. It is a good pick for families and anyone starting a new chapter of life.

4. Castle in the Sky (1986)

Castle in the Sky1986 · Film

The first feature released under the Studio Ghibli name is a rollicking adventure. A girl named Sheeta falls from the sky, protected by a glowing crystal, and is rescued by Pazu, a young miner who dreams of finding the legendary floating city of Laputa. Pirates, soldiers and wonderful flying machines join the chase. It is perfect for viewers who want pure, old-fashioned adventure.

5. Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

Howl's Moving Castle2004 · Film

Adapted from the novel by British author Diana Wynne Jones, this film follows Sophie, a young hatmaker turned into an old woman by a curse. Seeking a cure, she finds her way into the walking castle of the vain and mysterious wizard Howl. The story is romantic and whimsical, with an anti-war thread running beneath it. Its castle, a clanking heap of chimneys and turrets, is one of Miyazaki's most memorable creations.

6. Porco Rosso (1992)

Porco Rosso1992 · Film

Set over the Adriatic Sea between the world wars, this film follows an Italian seaplane pilot who, for reasons left deliberately vague, has the face of a pig. He hunts air pirates for money, sparring with rivals and charming everyone around him. It is breezier and more grown-up than the earlier entries, with a laid-back humour and a love of aircraft. Viewers who enjoy classic adventure films will feel right at home.

7. Whisper of the Heart (1995)

Whisper of the Heart1995 · Film

Directed by Yoshifumi Kondō, with a screenplay by Miyazaki, this is a grounded, everyday story set in suburban Tokyo. Shizuku, a bookish teenager, notices that the same boy has borrowed all her library books before her, which leads her toward first love and a decision about her own creative ambitions. There is barely any fantasy, yet it feels quietly magical. It is a lovely film for anyone who has ever dreamed of becoming a writer or an artist.

8. Princess Mononoke (1997)

Princess Mononoke1997 · Film

Now the path turns more intense. Prince Ashitaka, struck by a deadly curse, travels west and becomes caught in a conflict between an ironworking town and the ancient gods of the forest. Nobody is simply good or evil, and the violence is real, so this one suits older children and adults. It is an epic about nature, industry and coexistence, and many fans consider it Miyazaki's masterpiece.

9. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013)

The Tale of The Princess Kaguya2013 · Film

Isao Takahata's final film adapts a classic Japanese folktale about a tiny girl found inside a bamboo stalk, who grows rapidly into a young woman sought after by noblemen. Its animation looks like moving charcoal and watercolour sketches, unlike anything else in the Ghibli catalogue. The pace is unhurried, and the ending is quietly devastating. Save it for when you are ready for something poetic and reflective.

10. Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

Grave of the Fireflies1988 · Film

Also directed by Takahata, and based on a semi-autobiographical story by Akiyuki Nosaka, this film follows a teenage boy and his little sister trying to survive in Japan during the final months of the Second World War. It is one of the most powerful anti-war films ever made, animated or otherwise. It is also extremely sad, which is why it comes last here. Watch it when you are prepared, and not as a light family evening.

Beyond the first ten

Once you have worked through this path, plenty of treasures remain, including Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Ponyo and The Wind Rises. Many Ghibli films are available both with subtitles and in English dubs, so choose whichever suits your household. Each title's page on TellyFlick shows where it's streaming in your country, and keeping a diary of your journey makes it easy to see how your favourites change along the way.
